Edward Teach was born to a lower-class family in the late 17th century. His mother did seamstress work for wealthy families, mending fine fabrics, linens and silks, to support her son and her violent, alcoholic husband. Young Ed showed an interest in the fine things his mother brought home, but she made sure he knew that he wasn't meant for such things - softness, luxury, nice smells. They were poor, after all.

His dad beat his mum (probably also beat him) - one night, after a particularly brutal beating, when Ed was 13 or 14, he followed his dad to the docks and killed him. Then, he ran away to become a pirate. Since then, Ed's life has been one of brutal, piratical badassery - he grew his beard out, obtaining the moniker "Blackbeard" as he earned a reputation for being ruthless, efficient and basically impossible to beat. On his way up the ranks, under Captain Hornigold, Ed met Calico Jack and the two became friends - or the closest thing to friends a couple of pirates could get.

Eventually, Blackbeard became captain of his own ship, his own crew, and ostensibly had everything a pirate badass could ever want. Everyone lived in awe and fear of him, ships surrendered merely at the sight of his flag approaching, he was unstoppable!

And it was all boring as shit and he hated it.

Then one day in 1717 he heard about a new pirate on the scene - a soft, rich landowner who'd abandoned his family and estate in Barbados to play pirate. Stede Bonnet. He was curious. This was something new, someone different, maybe even a little weird. Blackbeard set out to meet this guy. When he did, it was more than Blackbeard could've dreamed. Not only was Stede just as fucking crazy as he seemed, but he was also delightful. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, excited at the thought of adventure but clearly totally incompetent at the actual day-to-day pirating shit, and something in Ed just blossomed in the warmth of Stede's open, affectionate nature and willingness to share himself.

And so, he and Stede were co-captains. For a while. But Ed's first mate, Izzy Hands, didn't like this new partnership one bit - he especially didn't like what Stede seemed to be doing to the notorious Blackbeard - turning him soft. Turning him nice. Finally, Izzy and Stede had a duel, and Stede managed to win (by getting stabbed, fucking crazy person), and so Izzy was banished. Annnnnd he immediately sold Stede and Ed out to the British. He dispatched Calico Jack to distract Ed, and get him away from Stede before the British showed up to make an arrest, but when Ed realized what was going on, he came back and got himself arrested right alongside his boyfriend friend co-captain. AND THEN he gave up his freedom to save Stede from being executed, invoking King George's Act of Grace and forcing them both into the British service for ten years.

Look man, people do crazy things when they're in love. Because that's what Ed was, he realized - in love with Stede Bonnet. He even concocted a plan for them to run away together, and Stede agreed to it, and then... and then...

Stede stood him up.

Heartbroken, Ed returned to Stede's ship, the Revenge, alone, and took up the sole captaincy. For a while, he moped wallowed in his feelings, and Izzy (oh, Izzy), disgusted by his display of grief, lambasted him for no longer being Blackbeard, the fearsome pirate.

So he decided he should become Blackbeard again. He shoved Lucius overboard, dumped all of Stede's books and nice things in the ocean, and marooned most of Stede's crew, leaving them for dead. Blackbeard was back. But at what cost?

First impressions.

Visual. Ed's pretty tall, but not super physically imposing. He's lean, lanky and weathered. Most of the intimidation factor comes from his long hair and beard (which are more salt-and-pepper these days than black), the fact that he wears a lot of leather and has a bunch of tattoos (plus just the reputation which tends to precede him everywhere he goes).

Fashion. This absolute fucking dumbass raided his local BDSM store and Hot Topic for most of his clothes so he inexplicably wears all leather while sailing the Caribbean. It's for the ~aesthetic~ okay.

Demeanor. He slouches like a cool motherfucker a lot, kinda leads with his hips when he walks, he's good at stomping around scarily in his boots, but when he's feeling particularly vulnerable he has a tendency to curl himself up/try to make himself smaller.

Aural/Olfactory. Ed inexplicably has a Kiwi accent because fuck you that's why, he's Blackbeard. And he probably smells like, you know, salt water, sweat, leather. Maybe a hint of tobacco. He probably hasn't bathed recently, unless Stede made him.
